Mammoth Lakes and the adjacent site of Mill City anchor the northern reaches of this high-altitude landscape within the Inyo National Forest. This 2018 survey documents a region defined by complex hydrography and alpine terrain, where the Sierra Nevada range drops into the Mono and Fresno County line. A sophisticated network of backcountry routes is visible, most notably the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as it winds through Cascade Valley and past Tully Hole. The map records an incredible concentration of alpine water bodies, from the prominent Duck Lake and Lake Virginia to smaller high-elevation basins like Edith Lake and Purple Lake. These features, along with landmarks such as Bloody Mountain and Mammoth Rock, illustrate the high-country recreation and conservation priorities that have shaped this portion of the eastern Sierra.
