About this map

The United States Mexico border follows the winding course of the Rio Grande through this isolated stretch of Brewster County, documented in the mid-1980s. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition between the river corridor and the high desert peaks of the Sierra Del Carmen and the Sierra Del Caballo Muerto. Civil infrastructure is minimal, centered on remote border crossings such as Heath Crossing Port of Entry and Stillwell Crossing Port of Entry. Much of the western territory is protected within Big Bend National Park, while the northern portion includes the Black Gap State Wildlife Management Area. Travel through the desert floor of Ernst Valley or toward Hot Springs relies on a network of primitive routes marked as Pack Trail and Jeep Trail, illustrating the region's enduring character as a wilderness frontier.
