Boston Coulee School stands as a central landmark in this portion of Cascade County, where the high plains are deeply incised by a network of drainage features. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the Smith River, which snakes through the southern and western portions of the quadrangle. North and east of the river, a series of pronounced geographic depressions including Boston Coulee, Murphy Coulee, and Splain Coulee shape the local topography. This area represents a rural ranching and farming landscape where the placement of roads often follows the contours of the coulees or the boundaries of the Public Land Survey System, as seen with S Eden Rd and Boston Coulee Rd. The distribution of these features illustrates the historic reliance on natural watercourses and sheltered coulees for settlement in the Montana plains.
