The Middle Fork John Day River winds through the southern reaches of this high-elevation landscape, where the administrative boundaries of the Umatilla National Forest and Malheur National Forest meet. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent rises and high meadows, including Boulder Butte, Myrtle Butte, and the expansive Cougar Ridge. These peaks look down upon a network of drainage basins, most notably the Big Boulder Cr and Beaver Cr systems, which have carved deep canyons like Corey Gulch and Riverside Gulch.
