Shavers Fork cuts a winding path through the heart of this high-elevation terrain, serving as the primary drainage for a landscape defined by sharp ridges and deep hollows. The small settlements of Bowden, Evenwood, and Alpena are clustered along the valley floors, particularly following the path of Us Rte 33. In the eastern half of the map, the Otter Creek Wilderness and Monongahela National Forest preserve the backcountry character of Shavers Mountain and McGowan Mtn. Notable for genealogists are family-named features and landmarks such as Mark P Burke Spring, Ernest Carr Spring, and Stuart Knob. The intricate network of trails, including the Mylius Trl and Shavers Mountain Trl, illustrates the modern transition of these former timber and rail corridors into a protected recreational landscape.
