About this map

The Rio Grande and its intricately flooded canyons define this section of the Texas-Mexico border within the Amistad National Recreation Area. Small residential developments like Amistad, Amistad Acres, and Box Canyon Estates cling to the high ground above the water’s edge, where the arid plateau is carved by deep drainages such as Live Oak Cr, Cow Cr, and Chapote Draw. The international boundary between the United States and Mexico runs through the center of the waterway, following the original river channel submerged beneath the reservoir surface. Further north, the landscape opens into Rough Canyon and the isolated drainage of Goodenough Springs, illustrating the dramatic shift from desert uplands to the vast aquatic environment created by the damming of the river.
