The landscape is defined by its deep hollows and high ridges, including Burnt Hill and Towpath Mtn. Local life in the mid-1940s remained centered around small rural nodes like Vintonton, Patria, and Housons Corners, each supported by numbered district schools such as School No 9 and School No 11.

The presence of high-elevation burial grounds like Fulton Hill Cem and Ellis Cem suggests the long history of hilltop farming that preceded the mid-century forest regrowth visible here. The Tennessee Valley Authority, mapping far from its southern namesake, documented the steep topography from Fulton Hill down to the creek bottomlands where Boucks Island splits the river current.
