The northern reaches of Fort Peck Lake and the Charles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge define this Missouri River country landscape. The terrain is a complex network of ridges and deeply incised coulees, including Shufeldt Ridge and Middle Eighth Ridge, which transition down to Sutherland Bay. This area served as a rugged livestock range, evidenced by numerous small-scale water management features like Duck Soup Reservoir, B and H Reservoir, and Half Barrel Detention Reservoir.
