Arroyos and prominent geologic formations define this high-plains landscape in Las Animas County. The southern portion of the territory is marked by the distinctive ridge known as The Hogback, which rises sharply above the Van Bremer Arroyo. Toward the center of the sheet, a natural pass called The Gap creates a break in the terrain between seasonal drainages. In the north, the Big Arroyo Hills overlook the winding courses of Big Arroyo and Taylor Arroyo. This modern survey illustrates the sparse road network of the contemporary cattle-ranching West, where routes like Co RD 70 and Co RD 54 provide the only access through vast townships of the Public Land Survey System, including T30S R60W and T30S R59W.
