Newark Valley dominates the western half of this White Pine County landscape, where the ephemeral Newark Lake sits at the base of the rising high country. To the east, the terrain ascends sharply into the Ruby Mountains, culminating at the peak of Buck Mtn. This area represents a classic Great Basin transition from flat valley floors to high mountain ridges. The map captures a high-desert environment where water sources are vital but scarce, marked by isolated features like Moore Springs in the northeast and the seasonal flow of Deadman Cr. Human presence is sparse, limited primarily to the track of White Pine Co Road 1 which skirts the mountain foothills, providing the principal access through Orchard Canyon and the surrounding rangeland.
