The S Fork Merced River carves through the northern reaches of this Mariposa County landscape, where the high Sierra terrain meets historic mining claims. In this rugged section of the Sierra National Forest, the legacy of extraction is evident at the Caroline Mine and Savage Lundy Mine, both situated near Nutmeg Gulch. These sites are linked by a complex network of fire roads and trails, including the Hite Cove OHV Route and Snyder Ridge Road, which navigate the steep drainage patterns of Snyder Gulch and Devil Gulch.
