Calamity Butte serves as the prominent high point of this high-desert landscape in eastern Oregon, topped by the Calamity Butte Lookout. The terrain is defined by a dense network of forest development roads, including Nat For Dev Rd 2840 and Nat For Dev Rd 28, which provide access to a rugged system of gulches and canyons. Small-scale ranching and remote outposts are scattered throughout the region, as evidenced by the Wade Ranch to the northeast and the H and Y Cabin near Pine Creek to the south.
