Happy Valley and the industrial settlement of Calderwood anchor this study of the borderlands between Tennessee and North Carolina. The landscape is defined by the steep relief of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee National Forest, where numerous family-named cemeteries such as Whitehead Cem, Boring Cem, and Maynard Hughes Cem are preserved among the ridges. The intricate drainage network of Abrams Creek and its many branches, including Bell Br and Kingfisher Cr, illustrates the complex topography that once challenged early settlers.
