Great Smoky Mountains National Park dominates the eastern half of this landscape, where the Tennessee-North Carolina border follows the high ridges of Hannah Mountain and Wolf Ridge. To the west, the Little Tennessee River is harnessed into a sequence of reservoirs, notably Chilhowee Lake and Calderwood Lake. The small settlement of Calderwood sits near the base of the dam, while further north, Happy Valley remains an active pocket of habitation marked by the Happy Valley Ch and the winding Happy Valley Road.

Wilderness management is evident throughout the terrain, from the Abrams Creek Campground and its nearby Ranger Station to the network of primitive routes like the Beard Cane Trail and Cooper Road Trail. Higher elevations are marked by distinctive landmarks such as the Lookout Tower on Bunker Hill and the prominent Parson Bald, showing a landscape transitioning from industrial river use to protected forest land.
