Volcanic geology dominates this 2018 survey of the borderlands between Siskiyou and Modoc counties. The landscape is defined by the Schonchin Flow and the towering heights of Caldwell Butte and Cougar Butte, located within the protected expanses of Lava Beds National Monument and the Modoc National Forest. This region is a study in rough terrain and subterranean features, most notably Tichnor Cave, accessible via the Tichnor Cave Spur.
