The Yellowstone River carves a dramatic course through this portion of the interior plateau, defining the landmark Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The landscape is a complex network of hydrothermal features and high-altitude drainage systems, where the massive Hayden Valley opens to the south. This 2015 survey identifies the core visitor infrastructure at Canyon Village and Canyon Junction, providing a record of the road and trail systems that provide access to the canyon rim. Geologic activity is prominent across the map, from the Crater Hills and Sulphur Mtn to the unique thermal features like Dragons Mouth Spring and the Sulphur Caldron near the river's bend. Numerous backcountry paths, including the Wapiti Lake Trail and Mary Mountain-Nez Perce Trail, crisscross the wilderness between the canyon and remote waters like Wrangler Lake.
