Rancho Murieta anchors the northwestern corner of this landscape, where the Cosumnes River cuts through the transition from the Sacramento Valley toward the Sierra foothills. The region's history is preserved in small clusters of settlement and burial grounds, including the Michigan Bar Cemetery near the old site of Michigan Bar and the Live Oak Cemetery further east. A network of small airfields, such as the Van Vleck Airport and Eagle's Nest Airport, serves the open terrain between these sparse communities.
