Rockwood and the adjacent community of Cardiff anchor the southeastern portion of this landscape, situated along the base of Walden Ridge. The area is defined by the sharp transition from the Cumberland Plateau down into the Tennessee Valley, with Eblen Gap providing a critical passage through the ridge. Local infrastructure is dominated by the Rockwood Municipal Airport and the network of roads and rail lines that follow the natural contours of the valley floor, such as N Gateway Ave.

Family history is preserved through numerous small burial grounds including Hembree Cem, Pyott Cem, and Cardiff Cem, reflecting the early settlement patterns of Roane, Morgan, and Cumberland Counties. Away from the urban centers, smaller communities like Mount Vernon, Dry Hill, and Pine Orchard are scattered among the ridges and hollows, including Shahan Hollow and Black Hollow. The terrain is deeply dissected by local waterways like Crab Orchard Creek and Whiteoak Fork, which drain the eastern slopes of the Crab Orchard Mountains.
