Rockwood sits at the foot of the Cumberland Escarpment, where the rugged topography of the Cumberland Plateau meets the valley floor during the mid-1930s. This Tennessee Valley Authority and USGS collaboration reveals a landscape defined by sharp elevation changes and a scattered network of rural institutions. Local life is anchored by small centers of education and faith, such as Dry Hill Ch and several country schools including Hatley Sch and Pine Orchard Sch.

Industrial activity and transportation are concentrated along the base of the ridge, where the Southern and Tennessee railroads parallel the Cumberland Escarpment. These rail lines served the settlement of Cardiff and facilitated movement along the corridor now shared by U S Hy Nos 27 & 70. Numerous waterways like Crab Orchard Creek and Piney Creek drain the plateau, carving out the hollows where early families established homesteads and the Tedder Cem.
