The Belle Fourche River snakes through the eastern half of this Crook County landscape, defining the transition from the high ridges of Pine Ridge to the complex drainage systems of the south. The small settlement of Carlile serves as a central landmark, situated near the headwaters of Dry Cabin Cr and Cabin Cr. To the south, the terrain descends toward the extensive waters of the Keyhole Reservoir and the smaller Little Keyhole Lake, where the shoreline is carved by numerous inlets like Sage Draw. This 2017 survey documents a region characterized by prominent topographic divides, including the Thorn Divide and Dakota Divide, which separate the various creek basins. Historically named landmarks such as Oil Butte and Monumental City suggest a legacy of early exploration and localized activity within the varied basins and draws of the Wyoming high plains.
