The Highwood Mountains rise sharply in this portion of Chouteau County, where the high peaks give way to a complex system of drainage and deep coulees. The landscape is defined by the transition from the Lewis & Clark National Forest in the south toward the rolling ranchlands and creek bottoms to the north. Carter Mtn serves as a prominent landmark overlooking the confluence of various mountain streams, including Shonkin Creek and Bishop Creek.
