Carthage serves as the central hub of this Mississippi landscape, where the street grid of the county seat transitions into a complex network of waterways and timbered bottomlands. The Pearl River snakes through the center of the quadrangle, creating landforms such as Deal Island and Peach Tree Island, and feeding oxbows like Coles Ford Lake and Adair Lake. To the south, Tuscolameta Creek and its many tributaries, including Beelucta Creek and Sweetwater Cr, define a low-lying drainage basin. Small rural settlements like Piggtown and Gill anchor the surrounding countryside, while family and community history is preserved at Cedar Grove Cem, Pleasant Hill Cem, and Pilgrim Rest Cem. The elevation rises significantly to the northwest at the Government Hills, overlooking the valley and the winding course of Yellow Cr.
