About this map

Cassville and the surrounding White County uplands are defined by a network of rural settlements and family-named landmarks. The landscape is punctuated by numerous burial grounds and spiritual centers, such as Wesleys Chapel and Hensley Chapel, alongside the legacy of local education at Hutchings College. To the north, Fanchers Mills sits near the head of Cane Hollow, while the southern reaches of the map transition into the valley floor near Gum Spring and Darkey Springs. The complex topography of the Eastern Highland Rim is evident in the deep recesses of Cashdollar Cove and Carrick Cove, which flank the heights of Gum Spring Mtn and its High Knob summit. This 2019 survey documents a landscape where traditional road names like Old Kentucky Rd and Old Smithville Hwy S preserve the paths of historic travel through these central Tennessee communities.
