Cathedral Peak rises above a complex landscape where high mesas and deep gulches meet managed water systems in Montrose County. This area is defined by the convergence of three major protected lands: the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the west, the Gunnison National Forest to the east, and the Curecanti National Recreation Area to the south. The terrain transition is sharp, moving from the broad expanse of Dead Horse Mesa and Black Mesa into carved features like Onion Valley and Iron Canyon.
