Sierra National Forest and Inyo National Forest meet in this high-altitude landscape dominated by the peaks of the Ritter Range. The terrain is defined by a complex network of alpine meadows and water bodies, including Ashley Lake, Gertrude Lake, and Iron Lake. The hydrological divide is clear as the N Fork San Joaquin River and the Middle Fork San Joaquin River carve deep drainages through the granite.
