About this map

Squaw Point dominates the northwestern portion of this 1957 survey, overlooking a complex network of deep drainages in Montezuma County. The landscape is defined by the erosion of the Colorado Plateau, with Cross Canyon and Squaw Canyon cutting through the terrain. Evidence of early mid-century energy exploration is visible through several isolated Oil Wells situated near the North Fork and the mesa tops. Settlement patterns are sparse, concentrated around the small community nodes of Heaton and Spargo. The presence of the Grange Hall and the adjacent Grange Hall Cemetery suggests a rural social and civic center for the local ranching and farming families of the era. To the south, the terrain becomes increasingly intricate as it drops into Hovenweep Canyon and Ruin Canyon, while a feature known as The Island stands isolated between deep canyon walls.
