The town is surrounded by a dense web of ditches, including Alfalfa Ditch and Childs Ditch, which redirect water from Surface Creek and Ward Creek to support the high-altitude agriculture of Cedar Mesa and Wilbanks Mesa.

Evidence of historical coal mining is pervasive throughout the western half of the map. Numerous workings such as the Red Canyon Mine, Independence Mine, and Black Diamond Mine are clustered near the small settlement of Colby.
