Center Sandwich serves as a historic focal point where the northern New England village structure meets the foothills of the Sandwich Range. The landscape transitions from the protected wilds of the Sandwich Range Wilderness and the White Mountain National Forest down toward the northern reaches of Squam Lake. Throughout this area, the legacy of early settlements is evident in the numerous small burial sites, including the Baptist Burial Ground and the Cem of the Religious Society of Friends, which reflect the area's deep religious and social roots.
