Pawnee National Grassland dominates the southern portion of this landscape, where the high plains of northern Colorado meet the Wyoming border. The terrain is defined by the dramatic escarpment of the Chalk Bluffs and the flat-topped Simpson Mesa, which guide the drainage of numerous intermittent waterways. These include Simpson Creek to the north and the West Fork Willow Creek to the southeast.
