Tonto National Forest lands dominate this central Arizona landscape, where the Verde River flows southward toward the Horseshoe Reservoir. A critical crossing point is found at Sheep Bridge, a historic sheep-trailing route across the river valley. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation changes, moving from the river bottom past The White Bluffs and Ister Flat up to the high ground of H K Mesa and the distinct peak of Chalk Mountain. This survey documents a wilderness area shaped by seasonal water and named springs, including the somberly titled Dutchman Grave Spring and Lower Dutchman Grave Spring. The drainage network is complex, with Tangle Cr, Sycamore Cr, and Mullen Wash cutting through the arid canyons and flats toward the primary river corridor, providing a detailed look at the hydrologic character of the Maricopa and Yavapai county line.
