About this map

The San Andreas Rift Zone dominates the southwestern corner of this 1968 landscape, where it shapes the course of the San Benito River and creates the distinctive topography of Stone Canyon. This region of San Benito County is characterized by large agricultural holdings and ranching operations, including the Elkhorn Ranch and the 101 Ranch. The rugged eastern terrain is marked by Cherry Peak and the drainage of McKenna Canyon, while the north features the broad expanse of Browns Valley. Evidence of rural infrastructure and earlier industry is scattered throughout, from a solitary Mine in the north to a Landing Strip and small Cem (cemetery) near the western edge. Several waterways, such as Tres Pinos Creek and Los Muertos Creek, cut through the hills, providing essential water sources in this arid environment marked by numerous Spring and Well locations.
