About this map

Square Butte and the Three Buttes rise above the high plains in this 1980 survey of the Montana interior, where the border of Musselshell and Yellowstone counties cuts through the southern drainage. The landscape is defined by its water sources and erosion patterns, from the northern Tepee Coulee to the winding course of Hawk Creek and its Dry Fork. Resource extraction and ranching utility are evident in the scatter of Mines and various Gravel Pits, alongside numerous wells drilled across the rugged coulees. To the southwest, Dutch Oven Creek and Cow Gulch further detail the complex hydrology of this rural territory during the late twentieth century.
