The Long Tom River meanders through the heart of this Lane County landscape, defining the drainage patterns for the surrounding valley. Local history is deeply etched into the land through a series of family and community burial grounds, including the Union-Turnbow-Mays Cemetery, the Danish Cemetery, and the Jones-Kime-Brown Property Cemetery. These sites, along with the Franklin Grange Cemetery, point to the generations of agricultural families that settled the area. Small hubs of activity center around the Cheshire Post Office and Alvadore Post Office, while the terrain is punctuated by prominent landmarks such as Richardson Butte and Wooldridge Butte. North of the settlement of Goldson, the landscape transitions from river bottomlands to the rising elevations of Nash Canyon and Chris Fur Canyon.
