Mortimer sits along the banks of Wilson Creek, serving as a focal point for this mountain landscape where the boundaries of Avery, Burke, and Caldwell counties converge. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation changes, from the heights of Chestnut Mtn and Yellow Buck Mtn to the narrow drainage of Raider Camp Cr. Most of the area is contained within the Pisgah National Forest, a designation that has preserved the network of ridges and creeks such as Steels Creek and Harper Cr.
