Chilao Flat and Horse Flats serve as primary points of reference within this high-elevation stretch of the Angeles National Forest. The landscape is defined by the steep drainage systems of Big Tujunga Canyon and the headwaters of the W Fork San Gabriel River, illustrating the complex hydrology of the San Gabriel Mountains. Historic recreational and forestry sites are scattered throughout the terrain, including Charlton Flat and the remote Valley Forge.
