Christopher and its neighboring communities in Franklin County are presented here in a detailed study of southern Illinois’ landscape. The area is defined by the course of the Big Muddy River to the south and the industrial-era infrastructure that supported the local coal mining economy. Small settlements such as Buckner, Coello, Urbain, and North City form a dense cluster of residential and commercial grids around the central hub of Christopher.

Significant genealogical interest is found in the dense concentration of burial grounds, including the Miners Cem, Saint Marys Orthodox Cem, and Saint Aloysius Cem near Royalton. These sites, along with the Old Mulkey Cem and Hickory Corners Cem, document the diverse immigrant and labor history of the region. The map also reveals the local water management systems through the Christopher Reservoir, Buckner Reservoir, and numerous smaller bodies like Hilyn Lake and B and A Lake.
