About this map

The south shore of Oneida Lake defines this 1940 survey, showing the established rural community of Cicero and its surrounding hamlets before the massive postwar expansion of the Syracuse area. The landscape is a network of agricultural roads and scattered schoolhouses, such as the Stone Arabia Sch and Cobblestone Sch, which served localized farming districts. Along the water, the transition from marshland to seasonal recreation is evident at Forest Beach and Doris Park, while the Barge Canal remains the primary artery for regional transport. The presence of numerous small cemeteries like the Cicero Center Cem and Taft Cem provides essential touchstones for genealogical research in this part of Onondaga County. South of the main settlement, the land descends into the swampy terrain near Mud Creek, where Geersbeck Island and Long Island rise from the surrounding wetlands.
