The growing metropolitan footprint of Colorado Springs and its surrounding military installations dominate the western portion of this 1981 survey. To the north, the United States Air Force Academy occupies the foothills below Black Forest, while Peterson Air Force Base and the Municipal Airport lie east of the city. The massive installation at Fort Carson extends southward, neighboring the communities of Security and Widefield.

Industry and transport infrastructure define the plains to the east, marked by the extensive High Speed Ground Test Center and rail lines including the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe. The landscape transitions from the peaks of Pikes Peak and Mount Rosa in the west to the open prairie drainages of Black Squirrel Creek and Chico Creek in the east, where small outposts like Holtwold Store and Yoder serve rural El Paso County.
