The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site anchors the southeastern corner of this landscape, preserving a legacy of the open-range cattle era along the edge of the Deer Lodge Valley. Irrigation and water management systems are central to this terrain, evidenced by the W Side Canal, Pauly Ditch, and Rock Cr Ditch. These man-made channels divert water from natural flows like Tin Cup Joe Cr and Willow Cr to support the local ranching economy. Higher elevations are marked by a series of small water bodies and reservoirs, including Upper Taylor Reservoir, Lower Taylor Reservoir, and Mud Lake. Transportation routes like the historic Mullan Gulch pass through the hills, while modern infrastructure is represented by the Deer Lodge-City-County Airport and the nearby Hillcrest Cem.
