About this map

The coastal marshlands along the Gulf of Mexico reveal an intricate network of tidal waterways and brackish basins at the boundary of Cameron and Vermilion Parish. Dominating the central landscape is the shallow expanse of Flat Lake, flanked by the larger Rollover Lake to the east and a series of smaller water bodies including Oyster Lake and East Constance Lake. These features are interconnected by a complex system of bayous, most notably East Constance Bayou and Rollover Bayou, which served as critical conduits for local navigation and drainage before modern coastal engineering altered much of the region. This 1954 advance sheet, based on 1932 field examinations and aerial photography by the Air Corps, preserves the natural contours of the Louisiana shoreline before decades of significant coastal erosion. The layout of Muskrat Bayou and North Rollover Bayou illustrates the seasonal flow patterns that defined life in these southern wetlands.
