The Plumas National Forest dominates the southwestern portion of this map, where the high-altitude terrain of the Diamond Mountains meets the edge of the Great Basin. Near the small settlement of Omira, the landscape shifts abruptly from the timbered slopes of Adams Peak and Crystal Peak to the broad, arid expanse of Long Valley. This transition is marked by a complex system of seasonal watercourses and springs, most notably Zamboni Hot Springs and Long Valley Creek, which drain toward the northeast.
