The Black River meanders across the southern portion of this region, creating a complex wetland environment of oxbows and sloughs that define the border between Independence and Jackson counties. Local geography is dominated by these water features, including Swift Slough, Horseshoe Lake, and Lower Curia Lake. To the north, the terrain transitions toward Turkey Hill, where the landscape becomes more structured around the small communities of Cord, Dowdy, and Hazel Grove.
