White River oxbows and expansive wetlands dominate this portion of Arkansas County, where the river's winding course marks the boundary with Monroe County. Much of the eastern landscape is protected within the Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge, a labyrinth of backwaters including Maddox Bay, Upper Forked Lake, and Goose Lake. These water bodies represent the remnant channels and sloughs of a shifting river system, creating a specialized environment of bays and bottomlands.
