Otero Mesa and the expansive desert basins of the Tularosa Valley dominate this late-1970s survey along the New Mexico and Texas border. The landscape is defined by vast ranching tracts and military activity, with much of the southwestern quadrant occupied by the Fort Bliss Military Reservation (McGregor Range). Significant infrastructure for livestock and light aircraft is scattered across the arid terrain, including the Old Wright Place, Tanner Ranch, and the Templeton Ranch Landing Strip.

In the east, the terrain rises sharply into the Guadalupe Mountains and the Lincoln National Forest, marked by the prominent escarpment of The Rim. Water management is central to the area's utility, evidenced by the Cornucopia Diversion Dam and numerous drainage patterns like Shiloh Draw and Cornucopia Draw. The southern portion features the distinct volcanic peaks of the Cornudas Mountains, including Alamo Mountain and Wind Mountain, which stand as landmarks above the high desert floor.
