Badlands National Park dominates the central portion of this landscape, where the plateau surfaces are cut by deep drainage systems. High, flat-topped mesas known locally as tables provide the primary landmarks, including Blindman Table in the north and Red Shirt Table to the west. These elevated features are separated by significant relief, most notably the steep descent into Battle Creek Canyon.
