Russellville serves as the primary hub in this late nineteenth-century portrait of Pope County, anchored by the junction of the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railway and the D. & R. R. R. rail lines. The landscape is defined by a series of prominent ridges and mountains, including Norristown Mountain and Dardanelle Ridge, which frame the winding course of Illinois Creek and its many tributaries like Baker Creek and Galla Creek. This survey was originally conducted by the Geological Survey of Arkansas before being incorporated into the federal topographic series, capturing the area's development during a period of significant growth for timber and agriculture.
