The Big Lost River Valley forms the central character of this Custer County landscape, where water management is visible through a complex network of man-made irrigation features. Gravity-fed systems including the Blaine Canal, Darlington Ditch, and Angelo Ditch distribute water across the valley floor, supporting the small settlements of Leslie and Darlington. The terrain transitions sharply from the agricultural flats to the high elevations of the White Knob Mountains in the southwest and the Challis National Forest at the northeastern margin.
