Defeat Butte and the adjacent Defeat Ridge dominate this high-desert landscape along the border of Malheur County, Oregon and Owyhee County, Idaho. The terrain is defined by a series of high ridges and volcanic features, including Hoodoo Butte and the prominent Stoney Corral Ridge. Water management is the primary human imprint on this arid environment, evidenced by a dense network of catchment features such as Mustang Lake Reservoir, Black Snake Reservoir, and North Hoodoo Butte Reservoir. These reservoirs, alongside natural landmarks like Little Lake and Mustang Lake, suggest a landscape historically utilized for livestock grazing. Drainage is primarily handled by Toppin Creek and its south fork, which carve through the high plateaus of the high desert plateau.
