About this map

The Black River carves a sharp, winding path through the heart of Jefferson County, defining the industrial and civic layout of riverside communities like Deferiet, Great Bend, and Herrings. These settlements, established near the river’s power, are captured here in transition, with Conrail tracks linking the hamlets to larger markets. To the north and east, the Fort Drum Military Reservation dominates the landscape, featuring the sprawling Wheeler Sack Field and the site of a CCC Camp (Abandoned). The northern reach near Sterlingville and Strickland Corners preserves a network of rural roads such as Bedlam Road and Reedville Road. Local history is deeply embedded in the terrain, from the F W Woolworth Memorial Cemetery near the riverbanks to the scattered locations of historic schoolhouses, including School No 3 and School No 5, which served the farming families of the Pine Plains.
