The Clatskanie River and its numerous branches dominate this landscape in Columbia County, where timber-dense hills meet the southern shore of the Columbia River. Small upland settlements and school sites reflect the rural character of the area in the mid-1980s, including Delena, Alston, and the historic Swedetown. Near the riverfront, the Northern Pacific RR follows the shoreline past Lord Island and Rinearson Slough, protected by a riverside Levee.
